چکیده

This paper reports on an approach tomodel generalized implicatures using nonmonotonic logics. The approach, called compositional, is based on the idea of compositional semantics, where the implicatures carried by a sentence are constructed from the implicatures carried by its constituents, but it also includes some aspects nonmonotonic logics in order to model the defeasibility of generalized implicatures.

An Adaptive Logic for the Formal Explication of Scalar Implicatures

Hearers get at the intended meaning of uncooperative utterances (i.e. utterances that conflict with the prescriptions laid down by the Gricean maxims) by pragmatically deriving sentences that reconcile these utterances with the maxims. Such pragmatic derivations are made according to pragmatic rules called implicatures. As they are pragmatic in nature, the conclusions drawn by applying implicat...

Non-monotonic reasoning in interpretation

The original article of Thomason pursues two goals: first to outline the central logical issues of non-monotonic reasoning, and second to indicate possible applications of nonmonotonic reasoning techniques in linguistics. This appendix will follow up on Thomason’s second goal and show that linguists have taken up his invitation to use nonmonotonic logic as a formal tool. Particularly in the new...

Semantic interpolation

We treat interpolation for various logics. In the full non-monotonic case, we connect the existence of interpolants to laws about abstract size, and to generalized Hamming relations. We also mention revision a la Parikh.

Efficient defeasible reasoning systems

For many years, the non-monotonic reasoning community has focussed on highly expressive logics. Such logics have turned out to be computationally expensive, and have given little support to the practical use of non-monotonic reasoning. In this work we discuss defeasible logic, a less-expressive but more efficient non-monotonic logic. We report on two new implemented systems for defeasible logic...

Monotonic Modal Logics Related to the Von Wright’s Logic of Place

In this paper we introduce the monotonic modal logics M4wn, M4n and MBn obtained from the basic strong monotonic modal logic MON by adding some formulas considered by R. Jansana in [8]. For each logic defined we prove completeness with respect to their characteristic classes of monotonic frames. The canonicity of these logics is proved using the representation theory for monotonic algebras deve...
